day 17

making a bear

This October, instead of properly particpating in Inktober, I dedicated the month to the study of teddy bears instead. I actually ended up trying to make my own, since it's something I'd been wanting to do for a while and already had the material to do it. I was happy to have finished the project by the end of the month like I planned, but it was more difficult than I expected it to be!

Of course the difficulty was mostly in drafting my own pattern. It started out as a classic teddy (because free patterns are very easy to find), but I wanted to try to combine it with the style of cotton dolls. It was a lot of trial and error but it was a fun learning experience. I always enjoy figuring out how shapes go together myself than copy a pattern directly, but I also hate pattern drafting so...

Balancing joints is difficult no matter what kind of doll they belong to!!!

His head fell off shortly after. Also posted on the microblog.
